	Most people have many of the right decorating elements; they just don’t know how to put them together successfully. Take for instance the bookshelves in a den or bedroom. These often become “catch-alls” for photos, books or important items. Here are some tips for rethinking and rearranging your display shelves.    First, take everything off the shelf and group the items together, putting photos, books, decorative objects together. When you do this you start to see relationships between what you intuitively thought was meaningful. You also get a chance to find lost items like keys or bills or that special button you put up on the shelf so you would remember it and then forgot where you had placed it!    Now you can look at your space and begin to think through what should go back on the shelf. Here are some problems and solutions to consider:
Problem:   Books and accessories are too big or too small for the shelves. Solution:   Adjust the shelves to fit the contents, or adjust the selection of items for that shelf. Problem:   Accessories and picture frames have been placed in front of the shelf, covering the books. Solution:   Bring the books to the front of the shelves and display objects to the side. Problem:   Books are not arranged in any order. Solution:   Arrange books from tallest to smallest, first from left edge to center, then from right edge to center. Alternatively, put books in the center with bookends, placing the tallest book in the center, then tallest to smallest down each side. Problem:   Completely filling the shelves making them look crowded and cluttered. Solution:   Group like items together and select a few to display so that you will leave open space on the shelves. Open space gives the eye a place to rest and creates balance.
